St. Margaret's Church of England High School

Overview:
St. Margaret's Church of England High School

Founded by Alderman William Preston, former Mayor of Liverpool, and Reverend John Sheepshanks, Vicar of St. Margaret's, Anfield, the school opened in 1879 with Mr. TB Royden, the parish dignitary and MP for West Toxteth, presiding. Mr. E Crossley served as the school's inaugural Headmaster, and Mrs. Gertrude Langton, an early teacher and benefactor, contributed to its early development.

Originally established as a Higher Grade School, St Margaret's evolved into a Central School with selective intake after the 1918 Education Act, based on a competitive examination. Following the Education Act of 1944, the school was rebranded as St. Margaret's Church of England School. During the 1950s, it introduced courses leading to GCE 'O' Level and 'A' Level examinations. The school relocated from Anfield to Aigburth in 1963, and in the 1970s, it had approximately 550 male students.

In 1980, St. Margaret's expanded to a four-form entry school for students aged 11 to 18, marking the admission of female students. As a Church of England High School, it attained Technology College status in 1997 and Specialist Language College status in 2008. The school increased its intake to five-form entry in September 1998 and further expanded to six-form entry in September 2015.
