CCHS Entrance Test: Latest Changes

What the New FSCE Format Means & How Progress Academy Is Responding

Chelmsford County High School for Girls (CCHS) has now confirmed that there will be changes to the FSCE (Future Stories Community Enterprise) exam format. Click here for the CCHS Familiarisation Guide.

This represents a meaningful shift in exam style and focus. As always, we have carefully analysed the official Familiarisation Guide and are adjusting our preparation strategy accordingly.

Below is a clear explanation of what has changed and how Progress Academy is ensuring your child is fully prepared.

What Has Changed?

The exam is now focused more on application and thinking, rather than predictable question types.

According to the official guide, the test:

  • Assesses application of KS2 knowledge up to and including Year 5

  • Focuses more on application than recall

  • May draw from a broad range of curriculum subjects

  • Changes format and content from year to year

In practical terms, this means:

  • Fewer predictable question patterns

  • More cross-curricular reasoning

  • Greater emphasis on structured thinking

  • A strong creativity component

What the FSCE Format Is Looking For

The new format rewards children who can:

✔ Apply maths in real-life contexts

✔ Read across subjects and infer meaning

✔ Think logically and solve unfamiliar problems

✔ Write clearly and coherently

✔ Explain their reasoning

✔ Stay calm when faced with something unexpected

Importantly, this is not about memorising obscure facts.

It is about demonstrating:

  • Strong foundations

  • Clear thinking

  • Intellectual flexibility

These are exactly the qualities that help children thrive at grammar school.

Where Progress Academy Already Aligns

Many elements of this format are already embedded in our teaching approach:

  • We emphasise reasoning over rote learning

  • We develop structured, organised writing

  • We teach multi-step mathematical thinking

  • We encourage explanation, not just answers

  • We integrate vocabulary and grammar in context

  • We build exam confidence gradually

However, we recognise that FSCE introduces a stronger cross-curricular and creative dimension. And that is why we are introducing something new.

Introducing Our FSCE Creative & Applied Thinking Programme

To ensure our students are fully prepared for CCHS under the new format, we are launching an additional targeted course designed specifically for FSCE-style assessment.

This programme will focus on:

Cross-Curricular Thinking:

Applying knowledge across English, Maths, Science, History and Geography contexts.

Structured Creative Writing

Stimulus-based tasks, logical planning, clear paragraphing and persuasive/explanatory writing.

Advanced Mathematical Reasoning

Multi-step word problems, data interpretation, estimation, checking and explanation of methods.

Applied Problem-Solving

Real-world scenarios requiring reasoning rather than memorisation.

Logical & Computational Thinking Step-by-step reasoning, identifying patterns, spotting errors in instructions.

Data & Source Analysis Interpreting graphs, tables, short texts and comparing viewpoints.

Clear Written Explanations Teaching students how to justify answers logically and coherently.

Exam Confidence & Adaptability

Practising unfamiliar question styles calmly and strategically.

This will run alongside our existing preparation to ensure our students are fully aligned with the CCHS format.

Why This Is a Positive Change

Although the format is evolving, this is good news.

It means:

  • Strong foundational learners are rewarded

  • Broad thinkers thrive

  • Genuine academic curiosity is valued

Rather than encouraging narrow preparation, the new format supports deeper understanding — something we have always prioritised.

Reassurance for Parents

We understand that exam format changes can feel unsettling.

Please be reassured:

  • We have analysed the format carefully.

  • We are adapting proactively.

  • Our curriculum is being enhanced accordingly.

  • Your child will be systematically prepared for this style of assessment.

Most importantly, preparation will remain balanced and confidence-building — never stressful or overwhelming.

Next Steps

Further details about the FSCE Creative & Applied Thinking Programme will be shared shortly, including:

As always, our goal is not just to prepare children for an exam — but to develop thoughtful, resilient learners who are ready to flourish at grammar school and beyond.
