Applied Reasoning will no longer feature in the English Paper
The Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex (CSSE) has announced an important change in the structure of the 11+ English paper, which will be effective from September 2024. The Applied Reasoning component, a staple in previous examinations, will no longer feature.
Why the Change?
Although CSSE has not explicitly detailed their reasons for this curriculum adjustment, it is presumed that the aim is to place greater emphasis on fundamental linguistic and literary competencies. This enhancement will likely focus on comprehension, language mastery, creative writing, and critical literary analysis—key areas that are crucial for academic success in English.
Adjustments in Teaching and Exam Preparation
In response to these changes, we have updated our revision strategies and the format of our mock exams to better prepare students for this new focus. Our teaching materials are now tailored to develop a deeper understanding of language and text, encouraging more profound literary appreciation and analysis.
